Such structures are used in ceremonies and rituals in many religions but they can also be used in a simple households where they perform prayers and offerings. The altar is also used for storing ritual items and it is also where spellcrafting takes place in some religions such as Wicca.
The Shrine: A bit similar to the altar but mostly made for worship, the shrine is a structure dedicated to figures of awe and respect.
